Bulletin: Official Community Notice Regarding the December 20th Fire

Dear Community Partners,

On December 20, 2017, Vancouver Native Housing Society experienced a significant fire in one of our family buildings, displacing approximately 50 tenants. These tenants have since been evacuated and relocated to temporary housing.

We are reaching out to our community partners to advise you of this unfortunate event and to ask for your support during these challenging times for our evacuees. We are working with the City of Vancouver, community partners, agencies and other resources to ensure all of our tenants are safe, secure and have essential items during the holiday season and beyond. We ask only that you offer support in any way you or your organization are able to comfortably. Your generosity and continued support will help us create the support network many of our tenants need during this difficult time of transition.

We are currently accepting monetary donations via our Go Fund Me campaign:

DONATE TO SUPPORT OUR DEC 20, 2017 FIRE EVACUEES

All physical gifts appropriate for children and teenagers that are unwrapped are required at this time, as are baby supplies & new clothes, gifts and toys, food vouchers, gift cards, and any new traditional holiday supplies will be accepted at our Kwayatsut building, located at 2465 Fraser Street (at Broadway), Vancouver,  and has front desk staffing available 24/7.

Due to the overwhelming amount of donations already received, we are ONLY able to accept new and unused clothing, bedding, or household items.

We thank you for your generosity to date and have enough used clothing and bedding for now.

At this time, what will be required long term is to assist tenants in refurnishing their entire households and rebuilding. This will be where the vast majority of funding will be needed. The most effective support method is to make a monetary offering in any amount possible for your situation. WE ARE GRATEFUL FOR ALL FORMS OF SUPPORT!

For assistance with gift donations, the demographics of the evacuees include:

Age Category Male Female
Under 18 10 (breakdown: 1, 3, 5, 7, 8, 10, 12, 17) 5 (breakdown: 0, 3, 7, 14, 17)
18-64 8 13
Over 65 2 9

On behalf of all of us at Vancouver Native Housing Society, we THANK YOU for all your continued support!

Osieam,

Vancouver Native Housing Society Board and Staff.
